WHAT I READ THIS WEEK

GOODREADS

This was a beautiful picture book filled with the songs from the Mr. Rogers children’s show.  I enjoyed it because I grew up watching Mr. Rogers and I think today’s kids would like it because they are familiar with Daniel Tiger from the PBS cartoon.  The illustrations are gorgeous and colorful and would capture any child’s attention.  The songs can be read like poetry and the index helps you identify what each poem represents. For example, if you want to read to your child about patience, the index gives you the poem and the page number of where to find it.  There are so many great topics to choose from like making mistakes, manners, sharing, shyness, and friendship.  I am definitely adding this book to my children’s books collection.

I enjoyed this companion book to Geekerella. The first book was a Cinderella retelling, and this one was a Prince and the Pauper retelling.  Again, the story takes place at a con (think Comic-Con) and we see a couple characters from Geekerella. But the main story is about Jessica, the star of a popular sci-fi movie, and fangirl, Imogen who looks a lot like her.  A simple mistake in identity finds Imogen instead of Jessica on the panel of the world’s most popular movie.  What ensues is a scheme to give Jessica a chance to step away from the movie she regrets being in.  Overall, a great story and a lot of character growth and self-awarness happens.  However, I found that there were too many Harry Potter references through out the book.  Unfortunately, I am finding this to be a common thing in recent YA books.  It is distracting and unoriginal in my opinion.

GOODREADS

The thrilling second novel from the author of The Chalk Man, about a teacher with a hidden agenda who returns to settle scores at a school he once attended, only to uncover a darker secret than he could have imagined.

I checked this out from my local library.

GOODREADS

A dark midwinter’s night in an ancient inn on the Thames. The regulars are entertaining themselves by telling stories when the door bursts open on an injured stranger. In his arms is the drowned corpse of a little child.

Hours later the dead girl stirs, takes a breath and returns to life.

Is it a miracle?

Is it magic?

Or can it be explained by science?

I hope you are enjoying your reads. I have read one Karin Slaughter novel, and liked it. Hero Dogs sound really good! I love stories involving dogs (as long as they don’t die). The Princess and the Fangirl is one I’ve been considering. I haven’t yet read Geekerella, but I want to read that one as well. I loved Setterfield’s The Thirteenth Tale and am curious about her new book as well. I hope you love it. The Hiding Place sounds good as well.

I haven’t had a giveaway in quite a while. I used to have them more often–only two for my actual blog anniversary. I don’t even really celebrate that anymore though.

I hope you have a great weekend!

That Mr. Rogers book just makes me smile. I’m really curious about the Tudor book. I didn’t really like The Chalk Man but I do want to give the author another try. I have it on request from Overdrive but it will probably be a while before it makes it way to me.
