Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN TUESDAY TOPIC IS…

Books I hope to find under the Christmas tree.

One of the most celebrated, beloved, and enduring actors of our time, Sally Field has an infectious charm that has captivated the nation for more than five decades, beginning with her first TV role at the age of seventeen.

With raw honesty and with all the humility and authenticity her fans have come to expect, Field brings readers behind-the-scenes for not only the highs and lows of her star-studded early career in Hollywood, but deep into the truth of her lifelong relationships–including her complicated love for her own mother. Powerful and unforgettable, In Pieces is an inspiring account of life as a woman in the second half of the twentieth century.

WHAT I READ THIS WEEK

gildedwolves

I did not finish this for a couple reasons.  One is that the story and characters were very dull.  The second reason is that the whole story is based on a couple of verses in the Bible but the author added a couple verses of her own to Scripture which didn’t sit well with me.  I find it unacceptable to add your own words to any book that isn’t your own.

These were fun true stories by a veterinarian about his staff and clients.  The stories were very interesting and a bit suspenseful as he tried to figure out was was wrong with the animals.  There were a couple sad moments but lots of funny moments.  The books were nice and short which made them perfect to read during this busy holiday season.

I really tried to like this book but just couldn’t do it.  It is written in verse which at times made the story confusing.  The characters are a bit annoying and the ending seemed ambiguous.  Just not my cup of tea unfortunately.

The Book Blogger Hop is put on by The Coffee Addicted Writer . There is a weekly prompt featuring a book related question.

THIS WEEK’S QUESTION IS SUBMITTED BY Elizabeth @ Silver’s Reviews.

This weeks prompt is…

Does your book club have a book exchange for the holidays or any other time during the year? If you don’t belong to a book club, do you think that would be something fun to do?

My answer…

I am not in a book club but I always thought it would be fun to do one.

This book has published but I am waiting for it to become available at my library.  I was wary of this book because I loved one of her books and hated another book of hers.  However, La La in the Library raved about it so I decided to give it a try.  Thankfully, the hold list at my library is not very long.  Check out La La’s review here.

A dark midwinter’s night in an ancient inn on the Thames. The regulars are entertaining themselves by telling stories when the door bursts open on an injured stranger. In his arms is the drowned corpse of a little child.

Hours later the dead girl stirs, takes a breath and returns to life.

Is it a miracle?

Is it magic?

Or can it be explained by science?

Replete with folklore, suspense and romance, as well as with the urgent scientific curiosity of the Darwinian age, Once Upon a River is as richly atmospheric as Setterfield’s bestseller The Thirteenth Tale.

WHAT I READ THIS WEEK

Screen Shot 2018-11-30 at 11.11.25 AM

This was a wonderfully, bizarre book!  If you are hoping this books is another Big, Little Lies, you will be disappointed.  If you are hoping this is another well written book with complex and flawed characters then you will be pleasantly surprised.  The main character, Masha, after a near death experience, decides to open a health retreat and spa.  The book not only masterfully reveals her back story, but also the stories of nine other characters.  The author keeps you invested throughout the story by wanting to find out how these characters are going to be “fixed” during their stay.  There are some deep issues covered in this books which made me care for these characters and root for them all the way to the end.

memeanttobe

I was afraid this was going to be too cutesy and childish but I was wrong.  Yes, there was teenage angst and drama but it was written realistically.  There were a couple steamy make out scenes so this should be for older teens.  I liked the two different points of view and the way stereotypes were broken in this story.  Also, there were a couple scenes where the girls told the boys off about no meaning no which I whole heartedly agree with being in a book for teens.

I enjoyed this mystery/thriller.  It is a bit graphic at times and a dog is injured by a bear trap so a warning to you if that is not your thing.  The story goes back and forth between Marian’s boyfriend Tate being alive and what happens after he dies.  I love how the author didn’t tell us right away how he dies.  That is part of the mystery too for the reader.  Everyone in the book knows but it is slowly revealed. The main character is obsessed with a series of murders over the past few years and ever since her boyfriend died, the murders have stopped.  Her mission in the book is to clear his name.  I loved the way this story was told and I was totally surprised at the end.
