GOODREADS

Overall, I really enjoyed this book.  A unique idea of looking at a character dealing with key moments in her life and the world.  I thought the ending was a bit of a let down but still worth the read.

GOODREADS

There There is a relentlessly paced multigenerational story about violence and recovery, memory and identity, and the beauty and despair woven into the history of a nation and its people. It tells the story of twelve characters, each of whom have private reasons for traveling to the Big Oakland Powwow.  Here is a voice we have never heard—a voice full of poetry and rage, exploding onto the page with stunning urgency and force. Tommy Orange writes of the urban Native American, the Native American in the city, in a stunning novel that grapples with a complex and painful history, with an inheritance of beauty and profound spirituality, and with a plague of addiction, abuse, and suicide. An unforgettable debut, destined to become required reading in schools and universities across the country.

GOODREADS

Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver.

Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn’t simply about going fast. On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through.

A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life … as only a dog could tell it.

GOODREADS

In the sixties, Athene Forster was the most glamorous girl of her generation. Nicknamed the Last Deb, she was also beautiful, spoiled, and out of control. When she agreed to marry the gorgeous young heir Douglas Fairley-Hulme, her parents breathed a sigh of relief. But within two years, rumors had begun to circulate about Athene’s affair with a young salesman.

Thirty-five years later, Suzanna Peacock is struggling with her notorious mother’s legacy. The only place Suzanna finds comfort is in The Peacock Emporium, the beautiful coffee bar and shop she opens that soon enchants her little town. There she makes perhaps the first real friends of her life, including Alejandro, a male midwife, escaping his own ghosts in Argentina.

An uplifting and unforgettable story of a US Marine, his extraordinary dog, and the road trip of a lifetime.

MY THOUGHTS

This. Book. Will. Make. You. Cry!  Not only did I cry, I sobbed and snotted all over the place.  My dogs were looking at me like I was crazy!  I know a lot of people don’t like to read books that are sad especially books about dogs that are sad but since I have been through something similar to what happens in this book, I could relate which is comforting in a way.  I still grieve the loss of my Trixie (she is the one on the left in the photo above) and I had hoped to take her on a road trip before she died but unfortunately, we ran out of time.  Reading this story about Bella and Rob was therapeutic in a way. Also, Rob’s back story about his family and time in the Marine’s was very interesting.  His trials with his family and the military were many but his relationship with his dog healed him in ways nothing else could.  One of the most inspiring things about this book are the many people Rob and Bella met on their road trip.  Complete strangers stepped up to help them complete their journey.  Even though this book is sad in parts, I hope you will give it a try for the many wonderful and joyful parts and the lesson that is evident through out the entire book; don’t dwell on the past or the future but enjoy now and live each day as your last.
