What I Read Last

I was a little doubtful when I started this book.  I thought it would be a bit boring but I was pleasantly surprised to be wrong.  The author talks about each of the places Laura and her family lived.  She discusses what the landscape was like and the type of vegetation and flowers were around that the Ingalls family would have used to survive. The best part were the text examples taken from the book.  I felt like I was re-reading the books again which now I really want to do.  There were great photos of the family sprinkled through out the book and information and pictures of all the homesteads they lived on.  The author has been to all of them and shares her experiences visiting them.  I have been to two sites, South Dakota and Missouri,  and would love to visit more, especially Almanzo’s childhood home in Malone, New York.  If you are a fan of Laura Ingalls Wilder, this is a must read.  This book publishes at the end of September.

This is the third and final ( I think ) book in this series.  I am excited to get back into this fantasy world that Sarah J. Mass created.

This book is by the author who wrote the best selling book, A Dog’s Purpose.  It was not as good, but definitely still worth the read.  I liked how the author explored the stereotypes of certain breeds of dogs, especially pit bulls.  There was also some great examples of how dogs can help veterans experiencing post traumatic stress disorder.

I really struggled with this book.  It started out slow and just never grabbed my attention. With that said, I think you should still give this book a try.  There were some great moments and the Letter Library ( books that people would leave anonymous notes for others) was sweet.  This book has gotten lots of great reviews so I don’t want to discourage anyone.  It just wasn’t for me.  I may give it a try another time.

I am a huge Laura Ingalls Wilder fan so I requested this on NetGalley. I hope it is good.

Throughout, you’ll learn details about Wilder’s life and inspirations, discover how to visit the real places today, and even learn to grow the plants and vegetables featured in the stories.

It pretty much rained all last week which the foster pups do not like.  I had to sleep downstairs one night with them during a storm. My husband had to do the same another night.  Thankfully, there isn’t a lot of rain in the forecast this week.  But they sure are cute when they are sleeping aren’t they?

This was an Outlander novella.  A 500 page novella!  It takes place between and books 3 and 4 I believe.  I found it very interesting and is a definite read for Outlander fans.

I loved this book! It was so timely for me to read.  It is about a senior dog getting a second chance.  I currently have two senior dogs living with me that were in danger of going to a shelter and possibly euthanized.  If you love dogs and reading how both humans and dogs can learn from each other than I highly recommend this book.

These handsome guys got groomed on Friday.  They look like completely different dogs.  They were strutting around the groomers afterwards.  It was so funny and adorable.

My Lastest Reads

leavers

One morning, Deming Guo’s mother, an undocumented Chinese immigrant named Polly, goes to her job at the nail salon and never comes home. No one can find any trace of her.

This book was confusing to read at times. It would take me awhile to figure out who was narrating because it switches back and forth. It also switches from the past to the present. It just didn’t make the story flow very well. However, I did like the author’s purpose of this book. The themes of love and sacrifice, family and honor, and the struggles of an illegal immigrant are sprinkled throughout the book. I did not like the way the main character, Daniel, treated his adoptive parents. Being adopted myself, I have always been grateful to the people who took me in and loved and supported me my whole life. I feel Daniel was a jerk to them most of the time. I believe this is Lisa Ko’s debut novel and will most likely give her future books a try.

A dazzling story told in verse, of sixteen-year-old Declan Lynch and the girl whose centuries-old voice rings in his head.

This was a quick read because it was written in verse.  It was unusual but interesting.  I liked the references to the folk lore of Ireland and the love story weaved between the stanzas.  I highly recommend for those who love to read poetry.

I DON’T KNOW!!!

I had a couple books come in at the library so I may start on these. If you know me at all, you know I am sucker for dog books.

Or I might continue reading the Outlander series.  I am on book six.

Or I might continue my re-read of the Harry Potter series.  I am on book four.

The foster pups continue to thrive.  They were getting a little scraggly looking so I took them to get groomed.  I have never had to groom a dog before so this was a new experience for me.  I couldn’t believe how amazing they looked.

What I Read Last

horsedancer.jpg

This was a great read with a wonderfully quirky character.  If you like The Man Called Ove, you might like this book.  The humor and writing style were similar.  Eleanor lives alone and is considered weird by her coworkers and peers.  But that doesn’t stop her from being herself which is one of my favorite things about this book.  Eleanor has a tragic past and after 20 years has to start dealing with it.  This is what drove the story for me.  I wanted to know what had happened in her past.  She has a horrible scar on her face and her mom calls her from prison every Wednesday.  Along the way, Eleanor meets some wonderful people that help her in this journey of discovery and forgiveness.

After a close friend died of cancer, middle-aged, overweight, acrophobic newspaperman Tom Ryan decided to pay tribute to her in a most unorthodox manner. Ryan and his friend, miniature schnauzer Atticus M. Finch, would attempt to climb all forty-eight of New Hampshire’s four-thousand-foot peaks twice in one winter while raising money for charity. It was an adventure of a lifetime, leading them across hundreds of miles and deep into an enchanting but dangerous winter wonderland. At the heart of the amazing journey was the extraordinary relationship they shared, one that blurred the line between man and dog.

The reason I say maybe is that I thought this was a new release, however, it is just a new edition with a new cover.  It was first published in 2009.  I thought the premise sounded good and I enjoyed Me Before You by this author so I might give it a try.

Goodreads Book Blurb

But then her grandfather falls ill, and Sarah must juggle horsemanship with school and hospital visits.
Natasha, a young lawyer, is reeling after her failed marriage: her professional judgment is being questioned, her new boyfriend is a let-down, and she’s forced to share her house with her charismatic ex-husband. But Sarah is keeping a secret–a secret that will change the lives of everyone involved forever.

Dash and Tank are still doing well.  I haven’t heard anything new about their adoption status.  They continue to thrive and I think they are happy here.  They play with my two dogs now and play with toys.  When they first got here, they were so scared and not used to anyone paying attention to them.  If I could just keep them from peeing in the house!!! As you can see, they have to where belly band diapers.  They love looking out side and watching cars and people go by.
